Why do celebrities get paid millions for reading lines?

It's the stupidest thing ever. Give it to fireman, policeman, doctors, nurses, whoever contributes to society.

That is not totally fair, they bring themselves to the screen/theater to give entertainment to the masses. Just imagine life without art.
