Since September 2006, UCLA adopted a holistic approach to college admissions for admitting college freshmen. It means it looks at more than grades. The committee also looks at school activities, hobbies, community service, and work experience. However, the committee looks at educational opportunities and the courses taken, too. On courses, they look for several things.

First, has the student taken college prepatory work. This includes Advanced Placement (AP) coursework. This can go in your favor in having earned college credits which can save on college tuition. Recommend taking AP courses related to what you want to study in college.

Second, academic enrichment programs help a lot, too. The best choice is things related to your intended college major.

Third, performance on SAT subject tests along with ACT and AP scores do count.

Finally, the minimum courses required are 2 years of social science (history and American government), 4 years of English, 4 years of mathematics recommended (but 3 years minimum), 2 years of laboratory science (3 years recommended), 2 years of a foreign language (3 years recommended), 1 year of visual and performing arts, and 1 year of college prepatory electives.

Despite what the other guy thinks, UCLA is actually pretty tough to get into. There's no real "required" list of classes to get into for UCLA other than what's required at all of the UC schools.

That's the bare minimum. You really need to take as many of the hardest classes your school offers to look attractive to UCLA.
