Afghanistan is a very hard land in terms of its terrain and also Afghans - the people of Afghanistan, who are famous as warriors and very strong fighters. They are very tough and we can see it maybe even today.
Afghanistan has always been a very demanded country by other nations like Brtitain, USA or Russia (Soviet Union), but none of them succeeded to gain the power in Afghanistan. British tried 3 times, and one of the famous stories from those war days are that Afghans killed alllllll british invaders but left alive only one person to tell the others how victoriously Afghans were fighting and how British got defeated. It is not only a myth but a true story.
Former Soviet Union tried very hard to gain power in Afghanistan but they went through their goal politically first, by taking "diplomatic" steps with former presidents of Afghanistan such as Karmal or Najibullah. Even though they succeeded and soviet union troops were in Afghanistan for some years, but again due to the Mujahideen wariors they got defeated.
now it is the turn for USA and lets see how they will go on.....
But the main point why British did not defeat Afghans is due to the terrain of the land and also due to the tough warriors of Afghanistan. And the reason why British wanted to invade Afghanistan was its strategic position, because at that time there was not any country between India and Afghanistan - no Pakistan, and few people know about the treasures and raw materials which are in Afghanistan but unfortunately due to the decades of war, nobody could work on them.
I hope I have answered your question

It has nothing much to do with bravery; though the Afghans are probably as brave as anyone else.
No, it is a similar situation to what the Americans faced in Vietnam, where the Vietcong made tunnels and scurried around like rats undetected.
Afghanistan is an incredibly wild and rugged country, with litertally millions of natural hiding-places, and it is only when they group and start shooting that anyone knows where they are. Then they are usually defeated quite quickly, and the living and walking-wounded make their escape again.
The sad thing is, the Afghans have a great sense of humour, and western troops have liberated them from the tyranny of the Taliban and restored some degree of normality, but they do not get the support of war-lords who want the heroin revenue, or from the Taliban who want radical Islam.
The real victims are the ordinary folk of Afghanistan, who seem to be doomed by eternal in-fighting and conflict, and yet, it could be so different.

In the 19th century the British were determined to protect their empire in India from interference by the Russians who were keen to get a warm water port other than in the Black Sea.
The Russians began to try to get the Afghans as allies. To prevent this the British invaded Afghanistan but could never win.
On the worst occasion 16,000 soldiers went in and only one came out alive.
The reason for the defeats were the difficulties of supplying an army in difficult terrain and few roads which made it ideal for the defenders.

Because they hide in caves and only come out when its safe to do so. This is guerilla warfare and a modern army cannot win by fighting fair. The only way to win is to use germ warfare which is banned under international law. There is of course the neutron bomb which the yanks will probably use on Iran. This destroys carbon life but leaves buildings untouched.
You dont even have the chance to say what was that flash!!!

Not entirely true. The Second Afghan War ended with Afghanistan virtually a British protectorate for 60 years.

Afghanistan is ideal guerrilla country.
We failed to sort out the Khyber in days of the Empire.
The USSR also got a bloody nose there.
At least the present official government there likes us....
One thing I find amusing, in the film "Carry on Up the Khyber", Kenneth Williams played the Khasi of Calabar. The current president is called Karsi. Time for tiffin.

In over 300 year the Afghan's have never been defeated. The country is horrendous to fight in and there is an old Afghan saying "kill one afghan and 100 will turn up at the funeral".
