Gargoyles (1972), a made for TV movie. Of course I was probably in kindergarten when I saw it. It was not really scary to me, but I remember being surprized by how scary it was. I suppose it "freaked me out" the most.
They just do not make scary movies anymore do they? I remember a lot of people being scared at these:
Exorcist - which sitll puts me to sleep
Halloween/Friday the 13th - the guys need help
Chucky/Magic (1978)/Puppet Master/Trilogy of Terror (1975) -give me a break! I will never be scared of dollies, but the Zuni fetish doll in Trilogy of Terror is by far the best
Nightware on Elm Street (1984) - horribly burned janitors don't scare me, especially if they are only a dream
Jaws - just get out of the water already!
Rosemary's Baby - puts me to sleep
Phantasm, Scanners, Re-Animator - zzzz
Here are some other kind of scary movies, mostly I found them exciting to watch as a child. I find any one of them superior to any horror movie today:
Alien (1979), Quartermass and the Pit (1968), When Worlds Collide (1951), War of the Worlds (1953), Thing from Another World (1951), Them (1954), The Black Scorpion (1957), Tarantula (1955), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956/1978), The Fly (1958/1986), The Blob (1958)
Some movies I do not really consider horror, but they had scary moments: Preditor, Jussasic Park, Terminator, Mad Max, Abyss, Blade Runner, Critters, Omega Man, Soylent Green
I love the old, classic horror movies, but they are too dated and not very scary: Frankenstein, Mummy, Dracula, Invisible Man, Wolf Man
And I love the giant monster movies, the scariest one I think was the War of the Gargantuas, but I was a child then. Here are some of them: Godzilla, King Kong, Giant Behemoth, The Last Dinosaur, Deadly Mantis, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Rodan, Daimajin, Gamera, Mighty Joe Young (1949), Amazing Colossal Man, and of course those which I already mentioned.
Today's horror movies are either zombies or "put people in a blender". I just do not care how they rework it, it is the same old stuff, and that stuff is awful. The scariest part of these movies is that people go and watch it, and that some body really sick is making these movies instead of locked up somewhere.
There is also a trend to make "horror" movies based on things being insane and on evil vs. evil. You just can't identify with anyone or care who wins (you find yourself desparately wanting them all to lose, assuming you just don't run away screaming because this stuff is so boring and trashy). Be sure to take a shower if you watch more than 5 minutes.
There, how's that for an answer?

I have to agree with upstatecamp: The Shining..... I think the frightening yet conservative use of horrific scenes was the key feature; nothing was over-done to a point where the only scary thing was the [monster]--the two homosexual men (by the way, the man in the [dog] suit is suppose to be a man in a [dog] suit; there was a costume party) in the room upstairs was the most disturbing scene in the whole movie.

I think the best horror I've watched in the past two years is High Tension, a great movie to rent if you can get over the fact that it's dubbed in english from its original french version. Directed by the guy who also did the 5th Element.
Aside from that, 28 Days Later and Nightwatch were excellent. It seems like american cinema is just ripping off j-horror movies these days and fails to turn out anything new and shocking.

I would have to say that the movie that freaked me out the most was White Noise. EVP is scary crap! Something like this could really happen and that is what freaked me out the most.

When I was younger the the witch on the wizard of oz scared me. I did not want to watch it and everytime the witch would appear I would close my eyes. Now that I am older I love scary movies. I really havent seen any good scary movies lately,. They just dont make them the way they used too.

When a Stranger Calls! Because it could happen to anyone. It is a movie that could be real. There isn't any supernatural powers, or any high tech equipment. It's just a girl with a telephone that's it. It's creepy because it could actually happen in the world that we all know!

I "LOVE" Scary movies. Some of my favorites are Thirteen Ghosts, American Haunting, Hause on Haunted Hill. Even when I know what scary part is coming up I jump. Drives me nuts!

Why the hell does some answer a question (Lady6), only to say they don't watch scary movies? Imbecile!
Anways, for me the best scary movie has to be Aliens (2) and Poltergeist. They were simple yet effective. Too many special effects can lesson the tension.

The Shining, Cube, The Evil Dead (I'm just terrified of zombies in general), In the Mouth of Madness, Japanese version of The Grudge, and Nightmare on Elm Street.
