Not much except for the flavor! A big study just came out totally debunking all the myths that garlic is good for the blood and heart. Garlic does nothing to improve cardiovascular function or prevent heart disease. Subjects in the study were given large amounts of raw garlic for three months and their cardiovascular function did not improve; it actually worsened in some people!
Sorry, we'll just have to eat garlic because it tastes good!

I am not the Rabbi, but, I can answer. Some folk erroneously believe that garlic preparations can lower blood pressure and some believe that wearing it around your neck can fend of evil spirits.

It makes spaghetti bolognaise, or chilli taste better, and it has blood purifying qualities.
The way to make garlic not smell on your breath is either to cut out the green bit in the middle, or put whole cloves into sauces, and take them out before serving.
That way you get the flavor and not the bad breath.
