I wish I knew, whenever I try to catch my elbow usually catches a glass of water or can of coke, making a larger more difficult mess to clean up.

Because our attention is on the thing we are out to catch and thus do not pay attention to the other things that are in the way. The way of an elbow, even the other hand.
And we think hound dogs are single minded when on the trail of something.
