First hip hop group to be inducted into establishment rock museum; ceremony in NYC on March 12.

Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five have become the first rap group ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They will be inducted in a ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC on March 12. They will be inducted by legendary Rock and Roll artist...Jay-Z?

Can someone explain to me why rappers are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I have nothing against Rap (I actually do listen to it) but I still feel it has no business in a Rock hall of fame. Can someone explain to me why it does?

I can't explain it for you except to observe that sometimes it seems to me that the only thing that rap and actual music have in common is that they are both recorded on CDs. Either that or someone doesn't have much imagination!

Rap is basically lyrics recited with a rhythmic background instead of sung with a musical background. Rap has a beat but no melody.

I agree with you that it is strange to induct rappers into a musical hall of fame.

Because popular music has changed over time. The name "Rock and Roll" is a little dated now, but wasn't at the time the building opened. Nowadays you don't listen to rock and roll you listen to rock. Rap has become a big part of America's musical identity (like it or hate it). Grand Master Flash pretty much invented a whole new genre of music and he is being hailed for that. Personally I think its great!

There are ALL types of musical acts and singers in the Rock N Roll hall of fame. Would you call Nirvana Rock n Roll? No- they were grunge. What about Prince and Madonna? One again not Rock N Roll but pop music.

I think its a great thing to appreciate musical acts for what they have achieved as artists.

Its called the rock n roll hall of fame but artists from ALL genres are inducted. The proper name for the place should be the MUSIC Hall of Fame but I guess Rock N' Roll is catchier.

Prince, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Dinah Washington, Muddy Waters to name a few, are NOT Rock N' Roll artists but are all members of the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame.

Hopes this helps by way of explanation.

I understand what you are asking, and I am not sure. I know they have a country music hall of fame and a rock n roll hall of fame. I guess they feel like lumping all music but country music into one category. If you ask me, they should just have a music hall of fame it just makes more sense.
I do however, think it is great that Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five are being recognized, after all, they are pioneers for that genre.
What I don't get is all of the people who complain about rap music. If you do not like that is fine, but why in the hell do you care if anyone else likes it. Grow up already people. The world is full of things we all do not like. Personally, I love all music and can appreciate it in all forms.

bob dont listen to rock all bob listens to is old school rap and bob has no idea why RAP would be in ROCK n roll hall of fame, rap should have its own hall of fame, thats like putting a poet in the science hall of fame or what ever you call it. thats retarded, and jay z being a legendary rock and roll artist bob is like what the **** too. i mean rock and rap supposedly both came from r & b, but the two arnt really even similar, infact most of the rock people hate rap. somethings we will never know.

It's a business opportunity for the owners of the hall. They have to start somewhere in order to be able to open the Rap Hall of Fame in NYC.

They'll start off with a wing in the RnR HOF and eventually move into their own.

And if we set up A Rap hall of fame, then we would be ever the racist separtist culture we ever were.
Disgusting.
Better this way.
Then, they can't argue West Coast vs., East Coast either.
Solves their internal problems too.
Hmmm...
I like it more and more.
