5 Facts -
1. The Republic of Ireland has no claim on Northern Ireland
2. The WHOLE island of Ireland was, in fact, given to the rule of the English King by the Pope in Rome
3. Not until the Republican movement of the early 20th century was a settlement reached that allowed a Republic of Ireland to be born.
4. Northern Ireland (Ulster) was part of the agreeement. It remained part of the UK.
5. Many islands are ruled by different governments. North America consists of the USA and Canada, for example.
So the Republic of Ireland is as legitimate as is Ulster being part of the United Kingdom. Neither has claim on the other. They are products of an agreed settlement, before which the entire island was, legally, under the British monarchy.

I'm in republic of Ireland i am pretty well off thanks to the tiger economy but if there is one thing that i would want most from my country it would be for the government to get northern Ireland back
its a disgrace that in less than a hundred years people have forgotten that we where once a full island rather than around two thirds of one and anybody that's says it would damage are economy needs to look at the strenght of are economy and its growth rate and we have plenty of money to develop northern Ireland to are level when we get it back.

thats up to the people of northern ireland. when starting with the elections this month they will get there own parliment. then a pro republic party needs to win control of this parliment and hold a referendum. if they vote to leave the uk they can leave. wheter ireland wants them to join the republic is another matter.

I think that all the folk in Northern Ireland that class themselves as Irish should stay where they are.
All the folk in Northern Ireland that class themselves as English should move to England, it's not far away,an leave a unified Ireland to the 'proper' Irish, the rest can leave, and take the troops with them!

Mainly becaue the majority of those living in Northern Ireland want to reamain part of the UK and as such the UK is duty bound to retain the province.
When and if the majority living there want a unified Ireland there will be a referendum on the Irish question of reunifacation.

I think that this is slowly happening as the President McAleese has a British passport - God Bless Her.
I think she fancies Bertie Ahern as she kissed him at Croke Park last saturday. Possibly they will get it together .....and have a Protestant / Catholic child and he / she will be the start of the Irish Monarchy that will unite the wonderful country that is Ireland. ( Answer from an Englishman. )

Ireland is so far up the E.U.s *** that the question of one sovereign nation gaining its Independence from another is moot.
In twenty years or less, thanks to Ireland and other weak sisters, the EU will have Europe bundled and ready to sell to the UN.
It makes me ill.
