It can get mildly irritated for a lot of reasons. Just put diaper cream in it a few times a day, and try to fold the front of the diaper down from now on so it isn't being rubbed and that should help.

My son still gets this from time to time. One day of diaper cream (whatever zinc based cream you are using) usually works.

Sometimes the belly button doesn't completely close before the cord falls off. That could be the case with your son and it possibly caused an infection.

Also, is it an innie or outie? Either way it could be his diapers that are irritating it making it red.

I would have the little guy checked out at his pediatrician. In the meantime, you could try a dab of Children's Neosporin on it. And, also, if it's not open, just sore, a tiny bit of diaper rash cream may work as well. It might get the inside of of sleeper a little messy (unless the diaper covers it), but it might get the rash to go away.

Good luck!

Get it looked at, my guess would be irritation from the diaper, you may want to try switching the brand of diaper or try cloth ones until it goes away

have the ped check it. My baby's belly button was open until she was 2 mos old. It healed on it's own.

It is if he's picking at it. Some babies do that. Or if his diapers irritate it, or ifits an outtie.Outties get irritated by clothing and other things.

Just have your doctor look at it.
