Well the DS is heavier and larger than the DS lite.
The DS lite comes in different colours.
The DS lite has a brighter screen.

And that's about all I can think of right now.

Although I am sure If you google it, you should find a website with the specs for both of them.

Hope it helped.

there is not any genuine distinction, as in they both play an identical video games. The lite is the replace variety inspite of the truth that. So truly some improvements were made, like it being smaller and thinner. also like the first 2 had stated, the ordinary is brighter. Plus you are able to in reality purchase a used DS. Nintendo stop making them and is largely making the DS lite.

well, to answer about differences, please see another question, here - [http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsrGG2i534tbJxkmlBswLOHsy6IX?qid=20061116171403AAeGoiv ]

the regular DS isn't available for sale anymore, because nintendo only makes the DS Lites. it's possible to buy a regular DS, but it's hard to find, unless used.

the DS Lite is a decent enough system, but a five year old might get frustrated with some games, and push on the touch screen too hard. it would heavily advise getting a gameboy advance, instead. i believe that the last game made for that system was released this month, (FFVI), but there are still tons of games out there. plus, as i've always seen it, games are timeless.

as for joel, i'm amused that someone that calls themselves a gamer refers to the DS as a 'gameboy', when nintendo already said that the DS is not a gameboy. true, the DS was built with an engine to run [gameboy advance] games, but that was an additive

You can't buy the DS(Phat) anymore, unless you buy a used one. The DSLite is much smaller, weighs less, has a bigger stylus, is more aesthetic, has a brighter screen, and a much faster charger. It is much better than the DSPhat in every aspect but durability. Don't get me wrong, the DSLite isn't exactly easy to break, but the DSPhat was practically covered in armor. x.x I recommend buying him the Lite. Also, pick him up a copy of Mario Kart. ;) Good luck with the birthday and tell him I said hi.

EDIT: In response to Joel's idiocy: .nintendo wanted more money..so they came out with a new look for it...to keep up the competetion with PSP...
Ha. You and Sony wish, Joel. The DS is destroying the PSP worldwide. Here, educate yourself. http://www.vgcharts.org/aconscomps.php?name1=DS&name2=PSP&type=2&align=1

DS- old version, heavier
DS Lite- lighter, brighter screen, longer stick for for comfort

Although I will say for a 5 year old you might want to get a game boy advance system because he could damage the sensitive touch screen and the DS games are a little challenging. GBA games are fairly easy for small children.

Hi im joel..im 18 and a gamer..
ok first of all..if ur gonna get what ur son wants u shouldnt ask this question..but anyways...theres is no difference between both gameboys..
the only difference is that one is smaller than the other one..and it cost more money because it just recently came out.....theres is no difference according to technology or which one is better than the other one....its just stocks..nintendo wanted more money..so they came out with a new look for it...to keep up the competetion with PSP...
But if u really love ur kid..u wont give a damn about what i just said..and u will just buy what he wants...thats what i will recommend u tho....MAKE THE POOR KID HAPPY
