slightly, but according to a consumer survey we were shown at work a few weeks ago Marks & Spencers is seen as the best retailer of 2006, and the most improved. But that is only for 1 year!

I think they are getting better, they did go through a weird patch for a good 5 years where all their designs were rubbish and everything was over priced and to me seemed a bit of a snobs shop, but I am now happy to shop there - although they are not my favourite!

Im an employee too and have been for 8 years. Id say they have improved over the past 5 years. Clothes and homeware have definately got better in quality and style and also have come down in price quite considerably. I enjoy the department Homeware that I work on but I wouldnt say I love my job. The food however is delicious.

Am not sure about going that far back - wasn't it 10 years ago they got record profits? But certainly they have had tremendous success in building the brand in past 5 years, in all sorts ways, products, service, merchandising, advertising. Re internal comms am not sure - there does seem to be a tremendous amount of new and short term workers in their stores currently, surely not sustainable and where has all that shop floor experience gone. Or maybe its just me getting old that their managers all look like teenagers!!

Hi1

Yeah, in a way, I would say ...

... but they STILL charge ridiculous prices for some of their stuff like flower vases and pot pourri glass dishes for £15 or £20!! When anyone with any 'nowse' would know that they will have been made for a FRACTION of that price in the Far East.

Their food is very good and not as expensive as it used to be.

Their cafes have improved vastly too.

Hope this answers your question!!

their food has improved considerably and is now top of the range. You can always guarantee quality grub from Marks & Sparks.
However, their clothes haven't. They always supplied classic clothes for women - I bought my business suits from them for years and they were timeless, good quality. Now, unfortunately, M&S have followed the fashion trail and produce clothes that are very 'this season' and date very easily. Where oh where is the classic trouser suit that women in their 30s and 40s (M&S core customers) can put on and know that it will look elegant and smart?
So, the answer to your question is "yes and no" !

This can be a matter of opinion. It also depends on where the store you visit is. Locally around me I'd say yes, although they stopped doing childrens clothes. But this would be most reasonable if you decided this yourself.

NO! too much money on ad campaigns featuring 'supermodels'. I resent that if I buy anything from there I am paying for one of them to buy another 2k bag!
Primark, same stuff, no million pound advertising campaigns.

Absolutely, they give you more salt in your food these days, without extra charge. They tried to be trendy, to encourage young buyers but that didn't work. That's when I noticed the older generation's gear went down hill. That's my opinion...... but I wouldn't be seen dead in Primark, ugh !......... alias Victor Meldrew
