People are unsure of where exactly the name Boxer came from, but most people agree that these dogs got their name from their innate ability to use their paws more so than most other breeds.

I have two boxers and, yes, they do love to jump on people, especially if they are not trained. They are very friendly, very loving and easily excitable breed. To stop this behavior, train them. Dog Training for Dummies is a great book for someone who would rather train a dog themselves.

A few tips:
1) Teach your dog to sit when he or she comes into contact with new people. Reward this behavior.
2) Put your dog on a leash and get a friend with some treats in their hand. Have your friend call your dog while you have them on the leash; if the dog jumps have them turn their entire body away and tell them, "No," while you tug lightly on the leash. Then, have the person turn back to face them and tell them sit, when they do, reward them with a treat. Do this several times, and in no time, your dog will not jump on people anymore. Good Luck!

The Boxer originated in Germany. It's name comes from a German word that translates to mean bull-biter. It is a cross between various breeds, possibly including Great Danes and English Bulldogs. The breed was first registered in the United States in 1904 but did not become popular in the United States around the time of World War II.
