Hi everyone!
I have 6 months old girl. I started winning her a month ago. She seems all right to try new tastes but she doesn't like to drink water or even juice. She's not taking it from bottle or cup so I have to give it by spoon. It's working but it's a bit funny to do it in public though. As well I'm giving to her ready Hipp Organic or Heinz Organic veg& fruit purees. I'm not cooking cause she's not eating much so it's not worth cooking a lot. I've heard if she get to use to have ready ones then it will be hard for me to introduce later my own home cooking. Is it true? As well because I want to go for Organic it's cheaper for me to buy for her for now little jars rather then buy all organic veg&fruits for her to cook. This is how I'm feeding her at the moment:
morning 8-9am 30-40 ml water or camomile tea (this is the only time she seems she can drink water or tea) +150-180ml follow on milk
12noon -1pm 150 ml follow on milk + veg puree 5-6 teaspoons+ fruit puree as dessert 3-4 teaspoons+ fruit puree as dessert 3-4 teaspoons + 30-40ml water
4 pm- 150 ml follow on milk + veg puree 5-6t+fruit puree 3-4t+30-40ml water
7-7.30 pm - 150-180ml follow on milk + fruit puree 5-4t (not always) + water
Am I doign right? Is it all right to give all the time follow on milk not infant milk?
What do you think girls? Please, share with your experience.

She seems like she is getting a good amount of fruits and veggies. Giving her jar food should not impact whether or not she likes home-cooking later. Try to introduce her to a variety of flavors now, when children get older they become more picky!

She needs to be on formula, not milk. Cow's milk, if given to early, is a risk factor for intestinal bleeding. Some sources say to wait till 9-12 months to give cow's milk while others say 12 months.

You do not need to give your child water or tea.

She also should be getting some iron fortified infant cereal (such as pablum). She should get this twice a day. Start her on rice cereal and introduce new grains every four days. If she tolerates this you can give her mixed cereal.

I didn't give my son follow on milk, just changed to cows milk when he was 1. I found the follow on milk really heavy. Hard to explain but I don't think he liked it! The reason the Health Visitors reccomend it is becasue after 6 months the iorn supply that your baby was born with starts to diminish but if she is eating a good varied diet there is no need for it.

It is better to cook your own food for your baby but there is no truth in what your saying unless you don't introduce real homemade food pretty soon. Even the lumpier jars (7month plus) are still smoother than real food and some children find real food hard to swallow because of this.

I was wary of cooking for my son because I didn't want to give him anything that wasn't labled baby food but once I started I never looked back!! Cook in bulk and freeze in trays. You can either use ice cube trays (cover them) or look on Ebay for weaning (not winning) trays, they are a little bigger so the portions are bigger. As for recipies ask at your local library for Annabel Karmel or Lorraine Kelly's book - both have lots of easy recipies. I also stole ideas of the jars when I first started!

It might seem cheaper buying the jars but it isn't. When you cook a pot of sweet potato, swede and carrot for about £3 that does about 15 portions you'll seen see how much your wasting on jars!

To answer your inital question it will be hard to introduce lumpy home made food if she gets used ot the smooth lumps of the jars but when its just pureed it doesn't make a difference but cooking yourself really is best!

As for the water try the cups that are a step between bottles and proper sippy cups. Still have a softish teat but get them used to the idea of a cup.

Weening.

She really should still be having formula, holding off on cows milk until about 10-12 months is better. 12 or longer being ideal. But many a child has been weened to cows milk at 6 months and lived to tell the story, I happen to be one of those babies.

She probably doesnt need the water, its not necessary to give infants water if they take juice and formula and/or milk. Its just takes up space in their tiny bellies which could be filled with something that has nutritional value. They get all the water they need from juices and milks. But again, I and my siblings all had water from birth (that was the practice for jaundice at the time). And we're all fine and healthy.

Babies will eat whatever you give them, giving her jar food wont ruin her for home cooking later in life at all. Although making your own baby food is always a wonderful idea, and surely wont hurt her any.

So long as she's not throwing things up, and is still developing and gaining weight iam sure she's fine. But everyone has tips, and all doctors have rules.

Oh if only they were born with instruction manuals eh? But they are not and thats what makes them unique! Don't worry hun - mother always knows best and if she's happy and healthy then don't worry! Health workers stress too much on mother on what they should be doing when and what they should be eating, drinking etc. Ignore them, its only guidelines and any sensible mother will try to follow them - but don't get hang ups over them - you know your child better than any doctor, midwife or health visitor! So sit back and enjoy parenthood. My little boy is 11 months and i started weening him at 4 months against the guidelines of 6 months - but i knew my little boy was starving and wasn't taking any more milk - so i started on jars as i wasn't too sure what he could manage without teeth. Jars are great at helping you find out what they like and dislike and they don't reject home made meals! My little boy loves my cooking and he sits down and has what we are having in a slightly mashed up version! my little boy didn't like water or juice either, and during summer I worried, but we just kept leaving a bottle of water near him and soon enough he started drinking it!

Enjoy parenthood - has so many rewards as you probably already know!

Just keep trying her with water in a cup, eventually she will start taking from it. If you dont offer it.. she will never have it.
I'm just wondering why you're giving her organic food tho. You obviously do not cook organic for you because you said it wasn't worth it for small amounts. So will you stop then once she is old enough to eat a little more and start sharing your food?
A health visitor told me not to waste my time with follow on milk, as they don't even stock it in the baby clinics. All it has in it is a little extra irona pparantly which they will be getting once you start weaning.
With my children, I started weaning them with food that i ate, just pureed up. I always thought that lots of specialist baby food would make them picky eaters... I don't know if thats true but I do know that both of my children were eating proper meals with me by a year old.
Good Luck and dont worry too much!!

As a mother of five children, I must say that you need to give your six month old child infant formula. The formula has nutrients in it that helps a baby grow and develop properly. Giving your child organic foods is fine and you seem to be giving her enough during the day, but giving her regular milk is not a good thing. Babies are not supposed to have milk until about a year old. You may want to check with the baby's pediatric to see if you should give her milk just yet or stick with formula.

If she doesn't like water or juice, that's okay because she doesn't need it at this age!!! Babies under a year get ALL their fluid needs and primary nutrition from breastmilk or formula - NOT water or juice! Don't give her tea either. Babies have small stomachs that fill easily, and if you give them something that offers nothing nutritionally (water, tea, or juice) they're going to refuse their feedings because they're already full!

As far as if give them jarred foods they won't like home cooking - there's no proof of that to be true. It's an old wives' tale. Children from 15 or 18 months until around 3 year tend to be picky eaters anyway - it's normal, and they all go thru stages. What they LOVE today might be "icky" tomorrow. Just keep offering new foods (one at a time please - watch for allergies!) frequently, and they'll eat what appeals to them.

im not sure that i am totally understanding what you are saying about what you are feeding her but i can tell you that you can give her all the baby food you want, when you introduce regular table foods she will not want baby food anymore. she will realize just how bad the baby food tastes and never eat it again, (at least that is what happened with my daughter) i dont know what follow on milk is, but if it says it is meant for toddlers then you shouldnt be giving it to an infant. a 6 month old needs regular infant formula or breast milk.

you dont actually have to cook separately for her, if your doing mash potato and veg can give her them all mashed up dont add salt till youve taken her share

i used to give mine weetabix too, using some of the milk form their bottle they loved it, also can give her those fromage frais yogurts

just keep trying her juices with a bottle or have you tried a straw?you'll be surprised how quickly they learn to suck through a straw mine did

also when she is on solids she doesnt need a lot of bottles just one for breakfast and one before bed the drinks shes getting during the day with food should be fine.worked with mine and there very healthy 18 and 20 year olds

WOW WAIT DONT GIVE YOUR BABY TEA
