Yes, they can, but they may not survive the nomination campaign. Honorable people don't dive into the muck like so many do. Honorable people won't lie, won't preen and won't pretend they walk on water. So, an honorable person won't generally win many political campaigns.
And, please, Jimmy Carter is NOT honorable. He's a miserable, bitter cretin, and he was a dishonorable and miserable president.

Former Senator Zell Miller said it in his book very well. He said as soon as a new Congress member is elected and gets to Washington D.C. the first thing that happens is the rest of Congress corrupts him. Term limits should be a national referendum. One in the Senate, two in the House. Then send them home with a check for 50 thousands and a thank you for their service. No big retirements or becoming million airs off the backs of the taxpayers. There is the old adage. Washington D.C. is the only city in America where bribery and corruption is legal. How many of us keep $90,000 in cash in our freezers. Look we have an impeached judge that is a Rep. that was going to chair the Judiciary committee. Pelosi, who takes hundreds of thousands in contributions from labor unions and vote how they tell her, but will not allow her employees at her hotel or her vineyard in No. Ca. be union. The cost per one way trip if she would have been given the Air Force plane she wanted to fly home on weekends with her family would have been over one hundred thousand dollars.

I used to think of Jimmy Carter as a nice man with a train wreck of an administration. His recent years activities have changed even that opinion of him. No politician is truly honorable. Carter is just inept.

I'm sure that the vast majority of people who go into politics do so for quite honourable reasons. Trouble is that, even with the best intentions in the world, as soon as you exercise power you upset someone; and someone upset is someone who will hate you, and regard you as being dishonourable, from that moment onwards. On top of that we have a media that is always looking to bring those in power down, and a public who love the sleaze seeking media.

ah,very tricky question..once upon a time i knew a man who ran for presidency.. during his early years he was with my dad in military school, just a year older..dad says the guy took care of him in some ways..i knew the guy to be as nice as my dad, very religious, spotless credentials (general's wives know more info than the intelligence)..the sort conservatives would vote for..then he ran for presidency..i thought being defence secretary was enough for the guy (or for anyone as nice as my dad) but no he (my dad's friend) had to run for presidency..then i started to question his character REALLY..eventually i gave up hope to find someone clean enough to deserve the title HUMAN..in the end politicians are just businessmen with a different titles all wanting fatter wallets.. sad

A truly honest person? Do you know any? I don't. Even I, who thinks I am almost always right, can admit, I can be biased. I try hard to not be, but sometimes my emotions will take over, and it is hard to admit fault. There, I did it! I am admitting sometimes, I am wrong!

I'm sure that some may set out with honorable intentions. Some have no intention of being honorable.

Show me any politician that gives an honest/truthful answer to any question, and I`ll show you a hypocritical two-faced liar.
