The silly part of this question is to ask us what you want. I humbly suggest you look at some paint samples against a mild blue or green background (the colors of the sky and ground, if you don't live in the desert...), and use relative sizes to the wall and trim. ie; bigger piece of tan, smaller piece of trim color. Also, consider the compatibility of colors. Typically, anything on the opposite side of the color wheel is complimentary (Go to a good paint store, and they should be able to help you, you don't have to buy, just get the help).
This is an intensely personal decision, and I agree with the door match idea, but that's just me... Good luck! ; )

RE:
What is a good trim color to go with tan siding?
My husband and I are building a house this spring and are doing tan siding. I am wondering what color trim would look good on the outside to coordinate with the siding color. I have seen white with tan, and I don't like that, and I don't like the trim to be the same color as the siding. ...

I think your trim should match the door. And I think cranberry red is a beautiful trim color for tan siding.

Cranberry trim is a good choice - especially since you say that you are painting the door that color . . . you are using close to the same color scheme that I have -
Caution . . . the shutters that I have (cranberry) on the south side of the house have changed color in 4 years of exposure - from cranberry (which they still are on the east and north sides of house) to black. These shutters were purchased at Loews. Taking them off (to paint or replace) will cause damage to the siding, as they were installed with spiked button holders. . . so, we're stuck with them. . .
It's your call - but had I to do it over again? I'd go with white . . .

I would go with a darker brown on the trim, then the door and shutters would stand out more, complimented by the crabapple trees. to do the trim with cabapple might be over kill. Sounds super!

Go to sherwinwilliams.com You can chose a house that looks like yours and insert the house color. It will recomment accent and trim colors. We used it when repainting our house and it turned out excellent.

A deep jade green would also look good. My neighbor has that and he has gotten alot of passers-by stop and compliment the color scheme. It would add a serious punch of color... and would still work with your door color!
