i travel regularly on the trains and it allways disappoints me when the train enters the centre of a big city....they are such squalid entryways.

trains are one of the major ways of arriving in a town....it seems to me the entryways could be such an opportunity to be used as a shop window for that particular city...instead of the rat-hole back alley kind of feel most routes have in to the centre.

couldnt we have a bit of public art or sculpture....maybe some original landscaping...or even just some bright flowers here and there.

isnt it time we beautified the rail-side so entering a city made you feel positive and [god-forbid] maybe even a little excited.

any suggestions along similar lines?

I think it is a great Idea to Landscape the Horrible Industrial Buildings that one sees on entering Cities . Plant some nice Evergreen Trees, and Shrubs to the front of trees and Flowers in front of them Marvellous Idea block out the horrible view. They could have some Sculpture on the Platforms, and some Paintings on the walls of the Stations. Give regular Exhibitions of Art and change them on a regular basis. The Railway Authorities could get a small grant from the city Corporations every Year to Beautify the Stations. They already do this any way on the Public Streets putting Flowers in Bowels and Baskets on Lamposts. They should think of all the Tourists they are going to get to there Metropolis, Tourists Bring money into the Economy what goes around comes around , they will get there money back anyway. If you have a Beautiful City the Tourists will want to come back again year after year.

Unfortunately the idiots in Washington seem to want to abandon the railroads. They give all kinds of favored treatment to the modes of transport useful to the middle class businessmen and the rich, such as the airlines and airports.

They allow the Interstate highway system, which was designed for national defense, to morph into a favored privilege of the suburbanites, paid for in part by the people in the center city who do not need it.

That would be cool. It DOES a lot for your mood when things are brighter (pics, people, etc.). I live in Kansas and they just denied another bill to have a train come through the city downtown. Dummyheads. I rode on a train once, but it didn't go very far. I think it would be exciting! My kids would love it too!

Definately like the idea. Planting and green stuff mainly as cities have so little of that. And would like to see them used more often too!

What lovely suggestion - but is it practical?
Everything these days has a price - and who would pay for this? I can't see the rail companies putting their hands in their pockets for this, and if they did there would be one hell of and uproar about money "being better spent on rolling stock"
Local authorities? - higher council tax bills for that wouldn't endear them to their voters!
Volunteers ? - a possibilty - but would honestly would YOU volunteer?

And graffiti and industrial landscapes are not creative?

Why not get off the train and explore what is there.
