They are trapped in another dimension. That is the dimension Silent Hill was in. That is why the Door opened yet they weren't inside in the "real" World and the Jeep wasn't outside. Also notice how the Jeep WASN'T damaged? Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who caught that. Anyway as to the end yes the evil one took over the little girl's body and that is why they couldn't leave that dimension. It was rather subtle but if you understood it they made it clear. The mother told her NOT to look. Well the little girl DOES look for a moment and the evil one catches her eyes. As I said it was subtle BUT if you understood it it was really obvious. Oh and want another hint as to why I say about the Jeep having no damage think back. After they crashed through the fence the Windshield was damaged. They showed that for a reason. When they were in the dimension of Silent Hill it was never damaged. As to them not being dead, notice the phone would break through with some a word here or there. It was another dimension as I saw it but a lot seemed to think they were dead.

They were in an alternate timeline I believe. At the end, the girl was possessed by the demon from Silent Hill.

Apparently they are stuck in limbo. It has something to do with the actual Silent Hill Game. You should post the question in the Video games section because I believe that a Gamer would best answer this.

They stayed trapped in another dimension...kind of like a ghost dimension, but they weren't dead...that's why it looked as if ash was falling all the time,,,in the dimension they were trapped in. The father was in this reality.

Yeah, they are dead. I believe it is open to interpretation, but for my money that is neither Alessa of Sharon, but rather the "dark" spirit that vowed revenge on Alessa's behalf.
