You can get only one, but they would enjoy company of another rabbit or a guinea pig.

Most pet stores carry them, or if they don't have any, they can order them in

Why not try your local humane society or House Rabbit Society? They take in all kinds of rabbits and would be happy to see you adopt one.
You can get one and keep it by itself. In the wild rabbits are solitary creatures. It would also be more attuned to you as it's companion. (And they tend to sleep all day while you are at work/school!)
If you want to get two, again, ask around the Humane Society and House Rabbit Society. Sometimes they have pairs of bonded rabbits, that need to stay together.
Don't only look for dwarfs, you can also look for Mini's... Sometimes dwarfs don't have the best personalities. Most of the Mini's... mini rex, mini lop, etc. have great personalities and are not much bigger.
A dwarf should be about 2 1/2 lbs - 3 lbs. Mini Rex are usually 3 1/2 -4 lbs. (and tend to be sturdier and easier to handle).
Your other option is to go the the American Netherland Dwarf Rabbit club website (http://www.andrc.com/) and look for a breeder close to you.

I'm sure you can find lots of dwarf or small rabbits to adopt by just going to www.petfinder.com and search on rabbits by zip code. And here is information on rabbit rescue specifically:
http://www.rabbit.org/adoption/index.html
http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rabresc.html

Rabbits are generally happier in pairs, but many solo bunnies are very happy and pampered. Even though rabbits are happy as a pair, not all rabbits seem to know that immediately and you have to go through the bonding process unless you bring home a bonded pair or two single rabbits at the same time, which is supposed to make it easier to bond them.

I'm including some links that has great information the care of rabbits. It's good to know about that before you bring a bunny home.
