Civilizations that were strong, like Persia, Babyllon, Greeks, etc, in the Near East fell because of declining ability to produce food. As they irrigated land in Iran and Iraq the land became salty, and no longer produced the amount of food.
They also cut their trees faster than they could grow back in a dry climate which affected the Greek/Turk and middle east areas.
Other areas with some innovative technologies or methodology then were able to conquer them or replace them.
Chariots replaced foot soldiers. Bow armed cavalry replaced chariots. Sturrup using cavalry armed with lances replaced bow armed horsemen. larger populations conquer smaller...
