Most marriages end in divorce in a year. They end up spongeing off the relatives because they are poor. Thousand dollar dress to be worn once! why not go to a small church, or justice of the peace. Are they that vain they want to be the "center" of attention? Its just a piece of paper

I agree, the money could be used for something so much more substantial and beneficial

I've never been married but I have sisters and brothers that have been married twice. All of the weddings that I went to that cost tens of thousands of dollars all ended in divorce by the fifth year. I consider it an extreme waste of money, but I guess people do it to celebrate and to feel like the center of attention. If I ever do get married, I simply going to the justice of the peace and then perhaps have a small reception for friends and family members.

Well many people say they will only get married once and it's a celebration so they want to make it very elaborate. I don't understand it either. Most people get a divorce anyway and all that money will be wasted. Personally I would spend that money on the honeymoon instead of the wedding. Or I would use it to pay bills or prepare for having a child.

Because people don't get married assuming they will get divorced right away, or at all.
To you, marriage may be just a "piece of paper," but to other people, a marriage is a symbol of the deep love they feel for each other, a love that has changed their lives for the better. And when your heart is that full of love and happiness, sometimes the only way to express is with a giant party to share your happiness with others.
Also, traditions, such as the big fancy dress, can be a way to honor or connect with other people. I'd kinda like to wear my grandmother's dress, because I miss her deeply and would like to have the sort of committed, loving marriage she had.

Sure, some people are wasteful or vain or "Bride-zilla" or selfish when it comes to their weddings. But that isn't the REAL reason why they get married, and it's unfair to assume EVERYONE is like that. Don't be so cynical.

Mine won't be that way. I've got better things to do with my money - like a honeymoon! And a wedding can still be big without being expensive, there is a happy medium there. But I personally have no interest in a big wedding, thats just me.

I think people always want their guests and "the nosey parkers" to know that they were able to spend "X" amount of dollars on their wedding. I agree with you that it is such a waste of money, however, in the same vein, i would have to say it is a personal choice as long as they do not want to borrow money from me later.

My total wedding only cost about $1000 dollars. My divorce will probably cost more, but i guess i made out overall.
