Family & Medical Leave Act of 1993 states that you can take a total of 12 work-weeks off without the worry of losing your job while you are gone. The leave is unpaid, however some larger companies will pay you while you are out (usually a portion of your regular earnings).

FMLA actually states you are permitted to take a leave of absence for medical reasons to care for yourself or any eligible dependent for no less than 7 consecutive days up to a maximum of 12 weeks and return to your job or an equivalent job, unless your position is being eliminated. For example your company can lay off a division while you are on a legitimate medical leave and include you in the terminations. No federal requirement exists requiring paid leaves or even requiring a non-qualified medical leave. Often state regulations or company policies may be more permissive, so you should check with your Benefits Representative.
