It's the easiest way for a cell to make a copy of itself.

Let's say you had a house, and you wanted to build another one next door. You could look at every inch of the first house, then try to match it by hand, inch by inch, searching for materials as you went. Or, more likely, you would have a blueprint, along with a list of appropriate building materials and the order in which you'll need them. Then you'd probably give those blueprints to a construction crew who could do the rest of the work for you.

That's one function of DNA: blueprints. But unlike a sheet of blueprints, you can't just hand the DNA from one cell to another. A cell keeps using its DNA throughout its life in order to make proteins. So cells have to replicate their DNA to give each new cell another copy while they continue to use their own.

If the DNA does not replicate, the cell cannot divide. There are only 2 instances that I know of where cells divide without replication. Formation of red blood cells (they have no nucleus) and formation of sex cells, sperm and egg cells are haploid.
