First of all, most answers I've read are wrong. NCAA does not permit a NCAA Football team to hold try outs. So, how do teams work around that. Western Michigan invites their potential walk-ons to play spring ball with them. When they see the players they want they are offered Preferred walk-on status. If there are any roster spots left open then they'll offer those to walk-ons. The hitch, there are never walk-on spots left over!
Michigan selects its walk-ons much differently. They review game film. Those good enough go into the walk-on pool. They wait to see who is accepted. Those potentials who get admitted to the university are reviewed by the coaching staff and walk-on spots are offered to those filling the teams needs. Again...no try out.
Northwestern on the other hand recruits their walk-ons. You have to have a brain to go their, so they won't take anyone!
Best thing to do...get recruited. The recruiting director was Mike DeBord. Send a letter of introduction. Include you GPA, ACT, and SAT scores. If you're not smart enough to attend the university don't plan on getting a reply. With that letter send a highlight reel. No more than 5 minutes, then pray they'll look at it. You have to get their attention and its not easy. Michigan can have pretty much any player they want...you have to make them want you.
How do I know these things. My friends son is a walk-on at Michigan. My son turned down a walk-on at Western Michigan to take one at Northwestern.
I give walk-ons a lot of credit. Most are good enough to start at smaller schools but opt for the quality educations at the better universities.
Oh yea...you want to start right now cause you've already missed Junior Day.

It's possible but you have to remember that many people that go through the "walk-on" tryouts are invited there by the coaching staff. So not only will you have the disadvantage of trying to make the team as a walk-on, you will also be an un-invited walk-on.
The fact that you are "watching running back instructional videos" tells me that you have no experience playing the RB position or maybe not even playing football to begin with. That's another setback, and in your case I would suggest the better course of action would be to go to a junior college that has a football team, get experience and then transfer to Michigan. If you play well enough in the JC ranks there's a chance that you could be recruited by Michigan as well, although you'd have to be one of the top ranked JC RB's in the country of course.
Now if you've already been accepted and the football thing is just something you want to try while you earn your degree then I wouldn't go the JC route and would just continue to go through the walk-on tryouts every year while taking advantage of the opportunity of obtaining a higher education.

Yeah anything is possible. Your attempting to walk on to one of the best football programs in the country. I'm assuming you have extensive football experience. If you don't have any experience you may want to look at a 1-AA or even a divsion II school. Either way, good luck. There is nothing like putting the pads on and playing football.

Sure, but it also depends on how fast you are, if you can catch the ball, and of course brake tackles. I am not too sure what the average speed of backs are at michigan, but if you can run a 4.4 to a 4.5 40 than you will have a good chance. Also being able to hold onto the ball and have a good vertical jump helps.
Keep practicing and don't give up!!

Sure.
Make great grades in your studies. The coaches will reward a walk on with a schollie if they have a high GPA. It helps offset the low GPAs of the dumba$$es they recruit and brings up the team average so the coach can get a bonus. This is the truth.

well if you really think you can make Michigan why aren't you starting running back at your school, the best way to make the team is to get recruited.

Can you play football?
I doubt you'll get an answer to this question on here, it's not like anyone can say 'hmmm...yep, you'll make the team.'

anything is possible...the question is, is it likely to walk-on to a nationally ranked football team? Probably not unless you have some sort of spectactular try-out.
Good luck!
