I am familiar with the reference styles but can someone give me an example of how to write it please. I can't find it in any referencing guides...

This is from the BPS Style Manual:

Journal articles
Smith, A.B. & Clark, E. (1995). Unlimited thinking. Cognitive Psychology, 24, 9–15.

if in press:
Smith, A.B. & Clark, E. (in press). Unlimited thinking. Cognitive Psychology.

You can refer to or download the manual online at:

Definitely look on the BPS website.

I'm told at Uni (In UK, so is relevant) that we should follow APA guidelines when referencing, which I'm assuming is the same as a BPS guidelines.

This site here http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ has lots of information on following APA guidelines. I would assume this is what you need.

Just for the record, I hate referencing! It's so hard to get it right!

Ok - here is an overview of some things you may need

A book reference

* Author of the book
* Year of publication
* Title of the book and other title information. Put this in italics (if you are handwriting you can underline it)
* Edition (but not the first edition; only later editions are mentioned)
* Publisher
* Accompanying material

* Author of the chapter
* Year of publication
* Title of the chapter and other title information
* In: (in italics)
* Editors
* Title of edited book and other title information. Put this in italics (if you are handwriting you can underline it)
* Edition (but not the first edition; only later editions are mentioned)
* Publisher
* Page numbers of the chapter

A chapter in an edited book

* Author of the journal article
* Year of publication
* Title of the journal article and other title information
* Title of the journal. Put this in italics (if you are handwriting you can underline it)
* Volume (in bold); Month (date) can be used if where there is no volume
* Issue/part (in brackets)
* Page numbers of the article

A journal article

If you eneed anything else i have a whole list. Cite the name and year in the text . And in the reference page do in Alphabetical order and then year order.

The Harvard system of referencing is used.
