This may be a psychological projection of strength. In prehistoric times, the strongest person got the most food, the best mating partners, etc. Weaker individuals had to make due with the leftovers.
Since we, as a society, no longer physically brawl for our food anymore, this is quite possibly a way to act out on those instincts.
Just a thought...

I agree with Chris H.
We view ourselves how others see us and how or where we fit in this world. Everyone wants to be a part of something. Our confidence or self worth is measured by our place and performance in society. No one likes the thought of being insignificant. Our egos need attention. ...but on the other hand lack of attention isn't very healthy.

humans are social creatures...basically,we want to be heard... famous people are those few who are able to make the world listen to what they have to say,and that's something humans often craved for- the ability to be heard, not just fame itself...

Maybe those people you are referring to don't feel good about themselves and are seeking approval from external sources-boy, are they in for a lot of disappointment.
