My wife runs a small hairdressing salon and for the past couple of weeks she has had a work experience girl helping her out. This girl is keen, shows initiative, is never late, and when there, she works hard. She loves working in the salon and would like to take up hairdressing as a career. My wife would like to take her on as a full time apprentice but sadly, the salon only has a modest turnover and this would only be possible with some sort of government assistance with the training costs. Are such schemes available? It would be a shame lose such a good girl.

Perhaps you need to have your wife contact the local Beauty College where a lot of the young hair dressers are going. The instructor there may know of some local, state and/or federal assistance program that could be available.
Also, contact your local Chamber of Commerce to see if they have any sources as well. Don't be surprised if they petition her for membership in exchange for information.
