you couldnt have decided to go to cape town at a better time...its summer there as you know.
the only down fall at this time is the influx of tourists both local and international tourists, which makes cape town very crowded and expensive.
booking tours can be done thru all hotels and there are many tourist offices located in cape town, i would book the daily tours once i am in cape town, first book your accommodation.
there are stunning places to go in cape town and surrounding places, depends on the time that you will have.
a must is the wine route, cape point and table mountain
go to the following site to get more info

Go Go Go!
Check out backpackers lodging (see links) they are all over the place and depending on your age and budget there are many between that type of accommodation and the Cape Grace Hotel at the waterfront. make sure you go up Table Mountain the first day there is no wind. The beach can wait! Take a tour of Stellenbosch and Paarl, see the winelands, If you have the nerves, go up in a chopper or a fighter plane, Robben Island is an absolute must, and so is Boulders, Clifton, Muizenberg, Cape Point and a dozen more.
It is just one of the most magnificent places on the planet and CHEAP to boot.

I would suggest you Google "crime south africa" before you make any plans to visit there. Cape Town is particularly crime ridden with numerous violent attacks on visitors to Table Mountains, Women raped on the Beaches, attacks on people in Restaurants and Shopping Malls, numerous car jackings and of course the normal high murder rate.
South Africa is pretty much a lawless Society with an uncaring Government and an ill trained, unresponsive and corrupt Police Force. The Tourist Industry sites are only worth looking at for info but they are so immoral that they either do not mention the high crime rates, deny it or try to obfuscate it with ridiculous statements like " I have lived here for X years and never been a victim blah, blah, blah". They dont tell you about the fortresses they live in with 10 foot high walls, electrified fence, private security and panic buttons, guard dogs and guns they carry.

It´s a beautiful place but
Just be careful....
what car you rent and drive, don´t rent anything too flashy,
be careful... where you drive, don´t drive in unsafe areas or down unsafe roads.
be careful where you go because of the high incidents of tourist highjackings, muggings, rapes etc. and be even more careful of where you go at night, speak to people in the hotels and wherever you can about where is safe.
be careful who you talk to and who you go out with,
be careful if you are out walking/hiking in areas where there aren´t that many people around,
be careful what you wear, don´t wear jewellery or carry cameras or other valuables,
always be cautious/on the look out for people following you, especially at night and in areas where there are few people,
these are the facts,
there are people who are not going to like what I write but you owe it to yourself to do some research about this before you go,
Maybe post a question like "Cape Town, South Africa is it safe for a holiday?" to get a better cross-spectrum of answers.
All the best whatever you decide.

I would advise rather going in February if you could... the wind blows non stop during December and January and it's not very pleasant. Also February is a lot quieter (less visitors) so you tend to get better service in stores and restaurants.
Enjoy your trip... it will be worth your while!

I've heard december is the best time to go - I've only been in June and October.
Last time I went, we scheduled a great white shark dive that was SO cool. You might like to check it out...you don't have to go in the water if you don't want to, but it was worth every dollar. If you DO go, absolutely do a township tour...
