Deja vu is a feeling that you've experienced events before even though you know it's the first time it's happened.
As to what causes it, nobody really knows. One idea that was proposed was that it's an encoding error in the brain when the brain tries to store a new memory where one already exists. Think of it like trying to overwrite a file on your computer; generally you get a warning asking if you *really* want to do that. Deja vu is thought to be something similar to that.

Personally I am blessed to have this happen to me a lot. I don't know why, but it's been happening since I was a very small child.

The best explanation I've read; Every night we dream many more dreams than we remember. We rarely encounter a real life situation without having some previous dream component in it. When the unconsciously stored dream memory matches real time experience; DEJA VUE!
