I am partial to this and tend to agree because I was a heavy smoker, and when my husband and I met we both smoked like chimneys. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I gave my husband my box of cigarettes and told him I was quitting. He looked as if he did not believe me, and sure enough for my child's sake, I have not smoked in 9 years. I lost that 1st pregnancy but after I gave birth to a baby girl and now I am 30 weeks pregnant with my son, and have not smoked once, since then...and proud of it.

I do not know, or think we have the right to punish for smoking.
However, in 1975, my cousin would not stop smoking 2 packs a day, and at 8 1/2 months the baby stopped moving and 2 weeks later she delivered a dead black baby girl. (The parents were white)
She said the baby kicked allot when she smoked. Of course, no one can be 100% sure the death was from smoking.
Sad story. She quit smoking and had 3 more live children. So the matter is between them and God. If people repent they are forgiven.

NO, there are so many other much more dangerous things we should be concentrating on besides whether or not a woman smokes a cigarette while prego. Maybe we should focus more on getting them to stop doing crack or meth, or maybe stop mothers from dumping their unwanted children in dumpsters.
If we keep thinking like this, then parents are no longer going to be able to actual parent their children. when we were kids this wasn't an issue, women weren't even told not to smoke and guess what? we are turned out pretty good.
Another point, if smoking can potentially harm a baby, then should pregnant women who drive cars be punished, this could potentially cause you to lose your child. What about a woman who feeds her child french fries, this can lead to heart disease, should she be punished?

We all know that smoking is not healthy however it is not against the Law. Most Mothers smoked when they were pregnant in the 40's 50' & 60's they even had a drink now and then! When I was nursing my first son the baby book sujested that the new mother relax with a glass of wine or a beer to help the milk flow. They gave birth to healthy babies. I had two 8 pluss pounders. I quit smoking years ago but we didn't know about dangers back then.

If it's still legal to abort a baby altogether, we can't do anything to punish women who choose to engage in risky behaviors while pregnant that could cause harm.
A very good question except for that loophole. Smoking MAY cause low birthweight, but not death, and even death is protected by law if it's done by the mother's choice.

I smoked with my first, and I quit when I found out that I was pregnant this time.
My first is perfectly healthy, and had NO health problems whatsoever. My best friend, who was a nonsmoker, had a baby with asthma who ended up with pneumonia before she was even one year old.
Having a baby is a roll of the dice, period. Smoking may INCREASE your chance of having a baby with a certain malady, however, it does NOT guarantee it.
It's the woman's choice whether or not to smoke while she's pregnant. I think that raising a child with a health problem is a big enough punishment.

It is their own choice to smoke or not. You have obviously never been a smoker because you don't seem to realize that quitting smoking is one of the hardest things that a person can do. Also, not all women who smoke when preganant are necessarily harming their baby. My mom smoked with both me and my sister and we turned out fine with no problems whatsoever. It is the woman's choice and no one else's. If you were to punish smokers, you would also have to punish women who got abortions.

You would have to PROVE all of that of course. You cannot punish purely on an assumption. What if the baby is born healthy? What if the mother is in an accident and loses the baby? Could you show which was the primary cause?
So, no is the basic answer.

I believe they should be punished. They are putting their child in harms way. I feel sorry for the babies. Just shows how much they DONT care. If i even were a smoker and found out i was pregnant, id quit on the spot.
PS... Love your name, im having my 3rd child in 5 weeks , naming her Jasmine. :-)
