Acids are cleaning or reducing agents, they will clean, not oxidize or age your brass.

An old reliable method of aging brass to fool the customers coming into an antique shop is to do the following: First wet the brass in a solution of about 1/2 twp of liquid dishwashing detergent to a half pail of water. Do not rise. Then submerge the object in a stream of smoke vapor coming out of an ordinary wood fire for at least an hour or so, adjust to suit your needs I like hanging the object on a piece of copper wire and a holding rod and let it drop down a fireplace chimney about 3 or 4 feet into an active smoke oxiding atmosphere.. That seems to give the best oxidizing results. Examine the object at 15 minute intervals and you will achieve a result that will look like old aged brass patina that I am certain you will be happy with.

Make sure there really isn't a protective coating on it. A lot of products have a clear laquer on them to prevent tarnishing.

If there is no coating, handling with bare hands will tarnish brass pretty quickly.
