I live in Texas 100 miles from Dallas 100 miles from Austin. I usually drive him to Dallas to take him to his check ups. He is in the 5th grade and has limited use of his arms. He can use his hands about 75%. He is smart and aware of everything. But he cannot keep up with his class on doing his regular daily writting work. Don't get me wrong, he can do the work but because of his disabillity he is slower and takes more time to do it. So it causes him to turn in half the work and gets half the grade. The teachers sometimes "excuse him" but this is not good if I want to prepare him for a world that takes "no excuses"..........:o(

Your son should have an IEP (individualized education plan). This can provide modifications for him in order for him to do his work. My students are allowed to orally answer written questions on assessments. He could be assigned an aid that could write his responses. If this is done though, he might need to do some additional practice on grammar and mechanics of writing. Also, it's perfectly acceptable to give him extra time to complete his assigments. You should get in touch with your school's child study team and ask them what modifications can be made for him. Making modifications is not 'excusing' him to turn in sub-par work.

What a mom. Ok, there should be an intermediate unit or some state agency that deals with the handicapped. Ask for an advocate.
I know a guy that in high school all he wanted was to be like the other kids-he had limited use of his legs. My brother was putting in a sidewalks and needed some help from strong guys so he included him. That was the beginning of his determination to do. He also has LD but with his mom's help...made it through associate degree for culinary...
Moms' do great jobs.

Maybe you could hire someone to help him write things out. It isnt fair to get a lower grade just because he can't get it all done on time. If he had someone to sorta take dictation that could write a lot faster, it would seem more fair to me.
