In the US, most lawyers go to law school for three years after getting an undergraduate degree. That means they are in college for seven years.

There are a few states (including Virginia, Maine and California) where you can become a lawyer without going to school. In those states, you can apprentice with a lawyer. In order to practice, you have to pass the Bar Exam.

Outside the US, things are often different. For example, in the UK and Australia, law is an undergraduate degree.

You usually have to have a 4 year bachelor's degree first. Then take the LSAT, get your recommendations and personal statement together and apply to law school. Law school usually takes 3 years. Then you have to pass your state's bar exam.

It first requires the right character traits such as those displayed by Hilliary Clinton. You must be able to lie but make think people you are telling the truth. You must be able to change your opinion depending on who you are trying to impress even when you previously defended the opposite opinion only months, days or even minutes earlier. You must be able to do so with such little self respect that you support your husband who used his position of power to induce a vulnerable young intern into "sexual relations" and embarrassed you publicly for all the world to see when any other self respecting woman would have kicked his lying, cheating butt to the curb. But you support him because of your own desire for political gains.

Besides that you have to take an exam called the LSAT before applying to law school. In general law school takes 2-4 years depending on whether you are full time or part time.
