Honda Does have a problem with these tranmission in the second generation odyssey take it from someone who changed a lot of them. there is a recall on these transmission but you have to be with in a certain year range and VIN# range also I believe the mileage plays a factor. I would call a honda dealership describe the problem and give them your VIN code Honda is very good for warranty coverage. I didn't like it as a TECH but it helps the customer.

RE:
Are there any Honda Odyssey (1999-2002) owners who've experienced transmission problems?
I'm thinking of buying a 1999-2002 Honda Odyssey minivan. Unfortunately I've heard some stories about the transmissions on these mininvas being troublesome. Now I don't want the opinions of just a handful of people influence my decision. Hondas are known for their quality so I find it...

A big time transmission problem. It may be once a week now but I guarantee it will get worse. My '02 Odyssey started out as a rough shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Then it would not shift into 3rd without letting off the accelerator. It was replaced free of charge in Dec 2005 with 71k miles. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was replaced also. A recall for an oil jet to be installed inside the tranny to lubricate the gears was done in July 2004. That obviously did not help. I love this minivan so I kept it. It now has 129k miles and there have been no problems since the replacement 3 years ago.

I don't think it's necessarily the transmission that is bad as much as it is how the transmission is treated. Remember this, when you are in reverse, completely stop your vehicle before shifting to another range. If you shift gears before your vehicle is completely stopped, it destroys your transmission. Not at first, but after a while of that, it will go out on you. I think that if you do get an Odyssey, it will last you as long as you aren't hard on it.
Here's a tip on automatic transmissions: If you shift to a gear that will move the vehicle in an opposite direction, make sure you stop completely. For example, if you shift from reverse to drive or drive to reverse without stopping, it's bad on your transmission. If you're moving forward or backward and you shift into neutral, it isn't bad on your car. It also isn't bad if you shift to a lower forward driving gear (D to 4, 3, 2, or L).

Actually, the Oddysey was the recall king, with over 15 known recalls in it's previous generation.
And yes, there was a class action transmission lawsuit which that vehicle fell under, which has different results for customers in case they have any issues.

There are many sources to check reliability ratings.
Here is one source you can use on line that is free, they DON'T give the Odyssey a good rating.:.

Also check Consumer Reports at your local library.
