It takes a while for hormone levels to drop down to normal - sometimes as much as several weeks.

It could be if shes that early on a scan doesnt usually show anything. I had one at 6 weeks and it was barely visible. The other explanation could be that she was pregnant and has lost the baby or sometimes our bodies re-absorb the pregnancy. She would still have these pregnancy hormones for atleast a week or two. They just get less and less as time goes on. Either way I wish her luck with the results, im sure she'll feel better once she knows one way or the other, the worst part is not knowing at all.

The exact same thing happened to me and it was an ectopic pregnancy. I was told by the hospital after a scan I had miscarried (at 6 weeks) but weeks later a check up blood test revealed I was still pregnant (almost 9 weeks by then). By then it was too late and I had surgery to remove the fallopian tube. Ruptured tubes can be extremely dangerous so if this sounds familiar she needs to go to her gp/hospital and say that she suspects an ectopic pregnancy. Tommorow morning at the latest!!
When the hospital finally realised I was still pregnant over two weeks later (through high hormone levels in my blood) I was not allowed to leave the hopsital until after surgery as it really is dangerous. Apparently after the tube ruptures (causing internal bleeding) it can kill you in 30 mins to 3 hours so it's quite important she gets the proper care immediately. Also if they catch ectopic in it's early stage you may not lose the fallopian tube and keep 100% fertility.

The hospital might be doing blood tests to watch the levels of HGC (Human growth hormones) which double consitantly for a period during pregancy.

If the hormone rate doubles, then she is still pregnant (it may be etopic...or a tubal pregnancy which is very dangerous), but if the hormones are declining, it's a sign that she miscarried.

It is possible to have the hcg level in her body to be elevated showing a pregancy, her body would even try to form a womb but no baby present. No matter what it will be considered a miscarriage if she has a sac with no baby. Be sensitive I am sure that she feels that she just hit a brick wall. I know I did I had 2 mc

Ignore all the miscarriage comments. Nothing in your post suggests miscarriage. 4 wks is too early to even see a sac. If her hcg levels are doubling ever 48hrs, she's pregnant and need not worry. Best of luck.

Maybe it's too early for an ultra sound. In fact it is too early for an ultra sound (4 weeks??). Doctor's don't usually give an ultra sound until a woman is about 6-8 weeks along. Maybe it's an ectopic pregnancy? Or maybe it's an early miscarriage. I'm surprised they haven't figured anything out yet.

It could honestly be a miscarriage. But Id let the doctors figure it out. Sometimes the bleeding is normal in the beginning. I wish her the best of luck.

If she had a miscarriage the hormones could still possibly in her body until every thing that was there passes out.
