It is to a girl what a bar mitzvah is to a boy. Around the age of 13, the jewish girl/boy becomes a young person in the synagogue and they have a ceremony and have to read the torah in hebrew. It's a big deal...sort of like a Holy Communion is to a Catholic, or a Confirmation is to all Christians.

i believe it is the female version of the bar mitzvah, which i believe is a ceremony marking the jewish child's coming of age...I think it happens when they are 12 or 13 to mark their cross into adulthood

That's a bar mitzvah for a young lady. Not all congregations observe them.
