Participles are used as adjectives (meaning they modify a noun) and together with another verb (such as "to be" or "to have") to form a particular verb tense. Present participles are formed by adding an "ing" to a verb and past participles can either be regular (add an "ed" to the verb) or irregular, in which case you have to memorize the forms.

1. In this sentence, the participle is "torn" so you must ask yourself if it describes the newspaper (in which case it is "A") or if it helps describe Sally's action (in which case it is "V"). Remember if it is part of a verb phrase, there will another auxilary or helping verb next to it.

2. This sentence contains a spelling error. The first word should be "Feeling," which is the participle in this case. Does "feeling faint" describe the subject ("she") or her actions? Again, if it is part of a verb phrase there will be another verb there to help make the tense.

3. Here the participle is the same as in #1 but it is used differently. Can you figure out which sentence uses the word as an adjective (describing a noun) and which uses it as part of a verb phrase (describing an action)?

4. Now that you know participles can end in "ing," can you find the participle in this question? Is it part of a verb or does it modify a noun? Remember that in questions, auxilary verbs are often brought to the front of the sentence.

I hope this helps you more than just giving you the answers. I know grammar can be tough -- hang in there!
