Your mom has her reasons, and unless you are paying rent, she makes to rules. Many people have a phobia of reptiles.
If she is willing though, try to research lizards with her, she may become interested and change her mind.
A good one to suggest is a Mali Uromastyx because they are friendly, vegitarians, don't climb, so they can't escape and are easy to care for

I think the best answer for the parent problem is to tell them that keeping a herp is a Learning Experience (say it with capital letters). Tell her that lizards don't need much care, SHE doesn't have to do anything, most lizards aren't strong, fast or tall enough to get out of their cages anyway, and it will be the Experience Of A Lifetime for you. (I know; I've been through this!)

That's dumb. Lizards don't hurt anyone or anything. They sleep all day and roam around their cage at night. They are like the best pet ever for a kid. Low maintenance. Show your mom some web sites about lizards or Gecko's as pets.

i really liked the idea to do research together with your mom, wish i woulda thought of that and posted it first...... oh well ill just say i have to agree, there are alot of people with phobia's of all types including reptilian friends, and if this is the case for your mom it might take awhile for her to allow one in her home if she even changes her mind at all. in your doing research your mom might find out there are friendly reptiles who make great pets and who would only escape due to human error if ever at all, plus they dont go potty all over the house either!! good luck to you and happy herping sooner or later, but hopefully sooner

maybe she just has reptile phobia. You can't blame her..ask her if you can buy one and leave it in a cage outside, like in the backyard or on the porch. She might be more willing to let you get one, knowing that there won't be any chances she'll randomly find your lizard crawling up the bathroom wall ;)
