Dunno. Probably because maintaining any one position too long causes the body's muscles to tighten into that position and eventually to hurt (we're not meant to be folded into a ball all day after all).

Stretching loosens us up more quickly than just changing position and it feels good because a stretch is actually tearing the muscules on a microscopic level and releasing endorphines. That's what brings the 'Mmmm' during the stretch ^_^

Don't worry, the damage a stretch causes is insignificant to your body and you heal from those little wounds VERY quickly.
