When I order food and spend my money, I expect it to be correct. If I am at a fast food restaurant, then I just deal. But if I am in a nice restaurant, I just politely tell the server that it's cold or isn't correct. Usually they handle it pretty well and I get what I want. I've even ordered something and didn't like it and explained to the server that it wasn't what I expected. They brought that back too. I've only done that a few times though. Nothing sticks out as a bad or good experience right now. I just think as long as you aren't rude about it - they are usually pretty accommodating. They want your tip & your return business!

Myself, if my food does not come to my table in the manner that it is expected to be in (hot, rare, or whatever) then I have no problem asking the waiter/waitress to take it back to the kitchen and get me another one. Why would I pay for something that I did not ask for, or want? It does not matter what type of restaurant, or other eating establishment, it is-the food should be prepared the way the guest has requested. If not, then expect to get it back or else it should be free. And, for the record, I have worked in the service industry as both the waiter and as a cook in the kitchen. If the order is wrong, then the staff must correct that order to be what the patron was asking for-even if what they got was really what they asked for but didn't mean to ask for (make sense?)

I do not return food to the waiter when I am not satisfied, unless I am in a first class restaurant, or I am in a hotel cafe or a fine dining place.
When you are eating in food place where the servers are stressed and tired, and you hear shouting in the kitchen, it is not ideal to complain (smiling or not), since they will not be happy to keep you for half an hour more, and do extra work for you when the tip will always be the same.

Burger King-Your way, right away. Yeah, right! I order 2 burgers with NO tomatoes, pickles, or onions on BOTH burgers, & the person fixes it like that on 1 burger & fully dresses the other burger & I tell them about it, & they say, "Why don't you just take the tomatoes, pickles & onions off?" & then I say, "No, U FIX ME ANOTHER BURGER THE WAY I ASKED FOR IT, DAMN IT!" & then they finally fix it correctly.
