The range of a population of answers is important because it shows just how variable the answer can be. This, in turn, affects the level of confidence you may have in the 'real' answer being within the 'spread' around the quoted answer to a problem. Without going into mega-jargon, this little tit-bit should still help you to understand the reasoning.

When you're comparing two (or more) variables (e.g. control conditions vs. experimental conditions), the spread of the data for each variable can give you some idea how (dis)similar the two datasets are, and therefore whether that (dis)similarity is due to chance, or due to the experimental difference between the two conditions.
e.g. For the results (means +/- SD) :
90+/-10 vs. 100+/-10
and
90.0+/-0.5 vs. 100.0+/-0.5
Note that although the means are the same in both cases, the data spreads (expressed as standard deviation) are quite different. The first result would probably not be significantly different, because the two data ranges overlap quite considerably (i.e. the difference in means is due to chance), whereas the second could be significant, because the data ranges do not overlap as much (i.e the difference is not due to chance).

The standard deviation gives the range of any data - this shows the variability of your values. For example if your range is small you know that most values are similar to each other however if your range is large it means your values are more different to each other.

It allows you to assess the reliability of variables and it gives you an idea of the extreme values of data of a certain variable you could get. E.g. if you did two tests for walking to school and driving to school and the range for driving to school was lower to that of walking you could conclude that driving to school is the most reliable method because there is less variability.
