Do the obvious first. Make sure the fluid level is correct, have the filter changed, if that doesn't fix it bite the bullet and have it checked out by a REPUTABLE transmission specialist. Don't spoil a fine car with a cheap job!. Good luck.

Probably worth trying new filter & fluid change, but chances are it's needing major work. By the way, don't take it to a 'garage' because most garages haven't got a clue about autoboxes. Look in Yellow Pages for a specialist repairer. Your car certainly sounds like it's worth spending the dough on, Merc 190s are getting rare & if you can afford it, the work's worth doing.

with out actually looking at it I could only suggest since you say it changes up and down fast meaning it goes thru the gears when it shouldn't. I would suggest a vacuum leak check or the apparatus o the transmission that controls the shifting (other end of the vacuum line)

i would suggest changing the filter in the gearbox, as its the cheapest and easiest thing to do, but if that doesnt (and i suspect it wont) fix it, i would say its new/recon gearbox time. sounds like a wet clutch pack is getting a little worn, and as engages, it slips then grabs, thus giving you your "snatching" effect.
