I came from a long line of democrats. I changed my party affiliation after returning from VNam. I vote a straight ticket unless I know of a particular 'putz' that is running. I do so because I have never met a liberal who wasn't in favor of taking my income for taxes, restricting my life by establishing stupid laws (tobacco lawsuits), taking away my property rights and willing to surrender to any enemy we ever face. I've never met one who had America's way of life or the interest of America's people at heart. The only thing they care about is their own power and prestige.

Well, I don't, but more often than not I vote Republican. I would think a lot of people do it out of habit, most older people were I live were raised to hate a particular party, most often the Republicans. A lot of people probably do it because of the ideology of the party, a Socialist is not likely to ever vote Republican if you get my meaning. Or an evangelical christian is not very likely t vote Democrat. I think the number is about 35% of registered voters on either side will vote straight party.
It's not likely to change either, even if we did abolish parties (which are not that powerful in the U.S. anymore) than interest groups would just double their power, as you see in non-partisan elections were parties basically just back a candidate un-officially. Candidates probably will never be elected on merit alone, if they are not now.

I was raised by democrats. They however are no longer Democrats. I vote on the party that most believes in what I believe in and the politician that more closely mirrors my beliefs. For example, if the socialist party aligned themselves with the Republican Party I would have to take a very serious look at that party and rethink my support and more importantly my vote.

Being from a long line of Democrats is not the reason I vote for Democratic candidates. My vote is based on what Democrats stand for since I have a very difficult time accepting much of the Republican's values, fiscally and especially socially. If you'll read George Lakoff's book "Moral Poltiics", it'll give you a better understanding as to why democrats and republicans vote as they do. Very interesting reading. Check it out!

I would venture to say that 40% of voters are ignorant to the voting records of the people for which they vote.
