Need help, my chilton book must be a typo. tells me to get 1 tdc then check intake exhust on 2 and 4 or something then to get 4 tdc and check intake and exhust of 2 and 4 again what about 1 and3 intake and exhust, what is the deal.!!!!

I would get a second reference book and if it agrees with your chilton, then follow the instructions. You probably won't need to change the settings. Make sure your following either the "hot engine" or "cold engine" instructions.

Best remedy is to set 1 at TDC check to make sure the rockers are both loose. Then adjust #1 then if you crank 1 revolution you can adjust #4 intake and exhaust.
Then crank 1/2 revolution and see which one 2 or 3 is TDC by placing a screwdriver (long) into the spark plug hole and feeling the top of the piston rise and fall...Adjust the one with loose rockers. Then do the same after rotating one revolution....This should do it
