how to step by step create association in the folder options control panel?

i have placed gmail icon on my desktop. i click to open gmail and get message "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing THIS ACTION. Create an assocition in the folder options control panel," step by step help please. I OPENED FOLDER OPTIONS ..ok but what to do next is beyond my understanding . where to go what to do..thanks robert morse [e-mail]

Get the extension of the file you want to associate. For example, say it is .msg.

Go into the folder options and scroll down to see if you find the msg extension on the list. If not, you will have to do a NEW and add it.

Click on the extension and select Advanced
It will open a window where you can associate an action (such as open or print) with a program.
Select the action you want (like open) then click the Edit button
Browse to the program you want to use to open all msg files.
Click OK
You are done
