Yesterday on the school playground, a 10 year old boy was hit in the private parts with a soccer ball. He was hit quite hard - and wasn't able to move for about 15 minutes. Then he went and sat down - but still was in incredible pain. When his Mom came to pick him up an hour later - he could barely walk. Should we have applied ice? What is the procedure for this type of injury? It was out of the question for us to examine him (unlike an arm or leg - we couldn't look at the injury) - and we didn't want to freik him out by asking him to look and see if blood was present. What should we have done?

apply a cold pack and call his mom

he needs to be evaluated in the ED by ultrasound to make sure that he did not fracture (rupture) a testicle (surgical urgency here)
