When adding you have to add like denominators.
-1/4+ 1/8
Multiply the fraction (-1/4) by 2 to get the same denominator as 1/8.

-1 becomes 2 and 4 becomes 8. -2/8.
-2/8+1/8= -1/8.
When multiplying you simply chose either the denominator(the bottom number) or the numerator(the top number of the fraction) and attach the negative(-) to only one of them.

-1/4*1/8
-1*1=-1
4*8=32
-1/32 or 1/-32
View the fraction from the top coming down to get the picture.
-1
-----
32

or

1
-----
-32

Hope this helped.

It's called a negative number.

Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting a positive number.

Subtracting a negative numbe is the same as adding a positive number.

Multiplying by a negative number is the same as multiplying by a positive number, except you put a minus sign in front of the result.

Dividing by a negative number is the same as dividing by a positive number, except you put a minus sign in front of the result. (just like for multiplication).

-a/b = a/(-b) = (-1)*(a/b)

It's the 'additive opposite' of the fraction. That means that when added to the original fraction the result is zero

a/b + (-a/b) = 0

You can change a subtraction problem into an addition problem:

a/b -c/d = a/b+(-c/d)

You can also change division problems into multiplication problems:

a/b = a*(1/b) , doesn't look much different but it's now communative.

when adding/subtracting, it's just subtraction, like with whole numbers:

1/4 + (-1/4) = 0
1/2 + (-1/4) = (2/4) + (-1/4) = 1/4

When multiplying/dividing, just procede like you would with whole numbers:

(1/4)(-1/4) = -1/16
(1/2)(-1/4) = -1/8
(-1/2)(-1/2) = 1/4 (two negatives make a positive)
