1) Some viruses do this. Boot into Safe Mode and do an antivirus scan if you haven't already.
2) Overheating CPU. Make sure the CPU fan is working; if it isn't, look into replacement options.

Boot into safe mode and do a check disk in DOS I think by default the computer shuts down and re-starts when ever there is a problem I cant remember where that was. If it was the CPU over heating it sure an the heck wouldnt start up again. I would do a check disk in safe mode and then do a virus scan shortly after that do a Regestry clean.

Go into Safe Mode and look at what is starting at boot up. Run MSCONFIG and stop anything that doesn't look right or that you know you installed. Download an anti-spyware program and scan the machine while in safe mode. See if the reboots stop after that.

mine did that and it was a really really nasty virus. The computer would shut down and restart at any given time be it 2 minutes,half an hour or whatever.

bad hard drive. I had this happen once, I replaced the hard drive and problem solved. The original hard drive was a new one even, it just turned out to be defective.
