No one found out who did it, but mr. Failed cop (he really is) is now on the warpath. Random searches, questions of students all around .What do I or anyone else do about this? He's driving everyone crazy and if he finds out I did it it will not be worth clearing my concience.

Shame on you! That is unforgivable. If I were a nasty person like you, I'd start spreading the rumor that the principal's favorite pet (there always is at least one) was the culprit.
Spread that rumor enough, and things should improve. Of course I would never do such a thing and am not suggesting that you do either. What we all want is peace and democracy in the.... oops, wrong propaganda bit there...

Well my advise would be do not tell anyone that you did it for at least 20 years not even your best friend. And never do it again.
