Sometimes. It depends on what you took. Caffine goes into breastmilk almost immedietly. Medication, depends on what it is.

It all depends on the substance, and it is really very complicated. For instance, if you don't get the proper nutrition, your body will find what it needs from you rather than your diet (if you don't have enough calcium in your diet, it will come from your bones and teeth, etc). In fact, even mothers with a very poor diet can produce very healthy milk. Only in severe cases of malnourishment is a mother's milk affected:

http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-diet.html
Caffeine is transmitted through the milk, but is relatively harmless in small to moderate amounts (http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/caffeine.html) Nicotine and alcohol are both passed through the breast milk.
Most every medication on the market has been tested for its relative danger while breastfeeding (how much of it goes through the milk and also whether it affects the mother's supply). There is even a rating system for it, called the Lactation Risk Category (http://kellymom.com/health/meds/lactation_risk_cat.html). Some medications are considered very safe, like Tylenol. Others, like Excedrin and Nyquil, are not so safe.
When it comes to substances that could potentially harm your baby, it's better to be safe than sorry. If you are ever not sure, as your pharmacist.

This is not always "true". Sure everything you eat and take goes into your milk. BUT, depending on when you feed and when you take the stuff depends on how much is in there. Alcohol is a fast burning one. You can drink in moderation. Caffeine is okay but you have to watch your baby. If you see he is getting wired from it, cut it down or out. It takes 83 hours or so for caffeine to get out of an infant's system. That is the one thing I have to watch because my son does get effected by it. As far as meds, anything your doctor prescribes, make sure they know you breastfeed and way the risks and benefits of the meds and breastfeeding. Remember that Breast Is Best! Don't give it up unless you have NO CHOICE! Your baby will thank you always for breastfeeding! You can take IB Prophen and Tylenol while breastfeeding safely. Always ask the pharmacist before you ingest meds! Food you can't eliminate everything just because there is gas or whatever you have to see what works for you. Happy Breastfeeding!

it isnt filtered out, it is just in a lower dose and broken down a little... if u need caffiene i.e a coffe, then do so in small doses and far apart...tell ur doctor u are breastfeeding befor being prescribed any medications and ask them about over the counter meds....generally tylonel is best and advil is next but u should stay away from aspirin cuz it has been linked to reye syndrome.... also with whatever u eat or take alwayz keep an eye on your babys reaction so you know how it affects ur baby cuz everything will affect each baby differently...

Some of "the bad stuff" does get into your milk. So you do have to be careful about taking medications even herbal supplements. I have breastfed 3 babies and I did drink caffeine in moderation and have an occasional drink. Check out kellymom.com this has some good information for breastfeeding women.

No! Did you not read anything or ask anyone at a doctor's office before you went off in this direction? And every Rx says on the label, do not take this if you are breastfeeding, etc. And now you are asking the public for an opinion? You only get one shot to do things right for a child! Call CPS and ask them.

No! Breastfeeding is just like being pregnant. Everything that you eat and drink goes straight to your breast milk. Smoking, drugs, caffiene, medication... You have to be careful what you eat and drink, and make sure it's ok with your doctor before you take any medication.

no whatever you ingest will be in your breast milk... why do u think they tell women not to drink alcohol or smoke while breastfeeding? or why there are warning labels on meds that say "consult your dr if you are pregnant or breastfeeding"?

No. some of these things do pass to the baby through breast milk, so you need to be careful what you ingest when you are nursing.
Good luck!
