I'm Italian, and I think that for people who live in other Nations, Italy is "all good", because it is just so different from America and other Nations outside Europe (I lived in the USA for a year)!
Anyway the most popular cities in Italy are:
Rome: which is the capital and it's full of monuments, art and pieces of history.
Naples: which is full of traditions and colours
Venice: which is the city of the lovers, the city on water. There everything floats on water and streets are canals, venice is the city of bridges. (In my opinion Venice is the best!)
Palermo (Sicily): which is full of temples of the Greek and Roman ages. There there is also a very beautiful coast where you can have a bath in the sea and get some sun.
Florence and Tuscany in general: Tuscany is beautiful. It is a region full of art, museums and fashion stores, but also full of Nature and trees and monuments and the BEST sea ever.
Milan: last but not least, Milan is the capital of fashion design and clothing, the capital of shopping and nightlife.
Those are famous cities in Italy, but there are also much more places to see here.
I'm from the Veneto region, Venice is located in my region, but it is not the only city to see here. For example, I personally live in a little town that's built on an old town of the time of the Romans. That means that under the ground here there are columns, pieces of temples and houses that you can visit in a sort of museum under the ground.

We went to Rome in November 2006 and it was amazing.
Stay just off the main streets and you'll have a fantastic time.
